How the guides are prepared
Each guide covers one project or one skill. It lists the materials first, then the steps in the order you do them, then the usual problems and how to fix them. Before a guide is published, the text is checked for clarity against its own steps: every material in the list has to be used, every step has to follow from the one before it, and the quantities have to agree from start to finish.
Measurements are given in inches and feet with metric equivalents. Sizes, quantities and times are estimates, because leaves, pinecones, pumpkins and doors all vary. Tools and materials are described by type, not by brand, and we do not publish invented reviews, ratings or testimonials.
The illustrations on this site are original drawings made for these guides. They show the materials, the steps and the general look of a project. They are not photographs of finished projects, so use them as a guide to the method and expect your own result to look a little different.
Craft safety
Handmade fall decor is mostly made of dry materials that burn easily, so a few rules apply to every project on this site:
- Use flameless lights only. Near any handmade decoration, use flameless LED candles or battery-powered string lights. Do not put real candles in, on or beside the projects shown here.
- Keep decor away from heat. Dried leaves, wheat, pinecones, burlap, paper and fabric must be kept away from candles, fireplaces, stoves and heaters. A garland on a mantel belongs there only when the fire below is not in use.
- Adults handle hot and sharp tools. Glue guns, craft knives, scissors, wire cutters and other blades need adult supervision. When children help, give them the steps that do not involve heat or blades.
- Follow the product label. Work in a ventilated room and follow the instructions on your own paint, glue and sealer.
The guides are general information. You know your own home, tools and materials, and you carry out every project at your own risk.
Corrections
If a step is unclear, a measurement looks wrong or a link is broken, please tell us through the Contact page and name the guide and the step. We check every report against the guide, and when the report is right we correct the text. Corrections that affect a material, a quantity or a safety point come first.
